A system is a combination of elements that work in synergy to produce the capability required to meet a specified need.  Systems engineering is a methodical, multi-disciplinary approach for the requirements specification, design, implementation, technical management, operations, and retirement of a system.

Systems Engineering is a logical way of thinking to produce the synergy between the constituent components of a system.  It is a methodology that supports containing the life cycle cost of a system.
